August Eve – First Harvest
August Eve is one of the Greater Sabbats celebrating the First Harvest on or around August 1 in the Northern Hemisphere; February 2 for the Southern Hemisphere; or during the Full Moon of the month. This Sabbat is also known as Lammas (Loaf-Mass), Lammastide, Lughnassadh (Celebration of Sun God, Lugh), First Harvest, Sabbat of the First Fruits and Harvest of First Grains.
The Wheel Turns: we have reached the peak of summer and the days begin to grow shorter. Traditionally, First Harvest was celebrated when fruits, vegetables and grains ripened and were ready for harvest. Celebrations at this time would include families or a community gathering to celebrate and share their harvest as they also shared in preserving and storing food and grains to sustain them through the Winter months.
Many of us try to put in as much “fun” as we can in August as this is the last of the sunny days as cooler days of Autumn approach. This is the time for celebration and thanksgiving as we enjoy fruits of the earth. Decorate the table (preferably outside), gather with family/friends and celebrate with local produce. Give thanks - sing and dance for appreciation of what you have as you send blessings of wishes and well being to the Universe. Many of us no longer rely on a garden harvest to sustain us through the Winter months, however we continue to celebrate and honor the traditions as our ancestors. Even though you may not have harvest from a garden, there are other “harvests” to “reap what you have sown” such as health, business, relationships and all that is new in your life from love to prosperity.
