Ah, Mercury Retrograde , the very bane of our existence. Or is it? You might be asking yourself, "Why is it that everyone freaks out when Mercury goes into retrograde?" Therein lies the question. So pull up a seat, pour yourself a cup of your favorite brew, and let's talk about it.

Three times a year this tiny planet likes to cause all kinds of trouble. It actually appears to travel backwards in the sky. What?! I know, I know. And this is where the confusion starts. From our perspective this planet has taken a hard left turn. Calm, it's just an illusion caused by the Earth's position in regards to a given planet. "Wait, you mean there are other planets that go into retrograde?!" The answer is, yes. However, for now we are only discussing Mercury Retrograde.

To begin with, the planet Mercury is the ruler of all communications – be it verbal, text, email, listening, writing, PM’s, DM’s, reading... well you get the point. But did you realize this also encompasses other activities that are associated with communication such as shipping, mail, and travel in all its forms?

"What do we do when Mercury is in retrograde?" Everyone remain calm. No, literally, remain calm. It is a time to exercise patience and understanding, remain flexible, allow extra time to get to where you are going, and avoid entering into any new contracts that you might be having second thoughts about. Be aware that during this time people tend to have shorter fuses and miscommunications are common. Read and reread any email messages and double check reservations. Wait until Mercury goes direct before making any final decisions. If this is not a possibility, have a back-up plan or plan ahead.

There are those that like to blame this little planet for everything that goes wrong in their lives. Are you working too much and not having enough time for family? Or maybe you are so overextended trying to be the perfect employee, the perfect partner, or the perfect parent that you lose sight of who you are. This is all about balance and, as my mother used to say “Too much of anything is no good”.

However, I like to think that this is the perfect time for some self-care. This is a time to reflect and turn our thoughts inward. Slow down, take stock of things, and think about what you would like to spend your energy on. Maybe you want to pick an evening and make it all about you. Draw a bath, grab the candles, light some incense, put on some relaxing music, bring the tarot cards or a book, and just relax. Mercury going into retrograde is actually a gift that gives us a chance to put ourselves first. If you use this time as a way to unwind rather than getting yourself all worked into a frenzy you might actually look forward to the next retrograde.

Bright Blessings from all of us at 13 Moons.
