Details of Your Medusa Statue:
Her hair, turned to serpents by Athena, is shown here in red with intertwining snakes which also adorn her neck and appear to hold her shell-like breast coverings. She wears decorative arm guards, upper arm bands and holds a bow with arrows secured behind her. Her serpent body is painstakingly highlighted in hand painted details. Where her body meets serpent is a skull, and down the coiling body which rests on stones her tail ends with a rattlesnake rattle.
Medusa was once a beautiful maiden. She desecrated Athena's temple by lying there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena turned Medusa's hair into serpents. Medusa was killed by Perseus with the aid of Hermes and Athena. Hermes cut off her head and gave it to Athena who put it onto her shield. The blood which dropped from the wound produced innumerable serpents which infested Africa.
