Athena Statue with Owl
Goddess of War, Wisdom, Victory and the Arts
The Greek Goddess Athena stands strong on the stony ground. In her right hand she holds her spear, which represents Victory, in downward position. On her left, outstretched arm, her Owl, who represents Wisdom, is ready to cast off in flight. She wears ornate war armor as well as the traditional helmet with plume. Her hair cascades from under the helmet down to her shoulders. Her armor from the shoulder and arm guards to breast plate and shin guards are decoratively portrayed and highlighted in gold and bronze. Her leather battle skirt is accented with a decorative belt from which hangs her sheathed sword. Flowing behind her from shoulders to the ground, is a cloak billowing in the unseen wind.
Daughter of Zeus and Metis, Athena had sprung fully grown out of her father's head. She is a warrior who defends, above all else, the weak and helpless. Athena is the Goddess of the City, the protectress of civilized life, of artesian activities, and of agriculture. In poetry she is the incarnation of Wisdom, Reason and Purity. Athens is her city; the olive tree, created by her, is her tree; the owl, is consecrated to her. Athena is a shrewd companion of heroes and is the Goddess of Heroic Endeavor. She is the Virgin Patron of Athens. The Athenians build the Parthenon on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honor.
