Seated atop a pentacle and surrounded by serpents the Horned God and Moon Goddess join together in a passionate embrace for the Great Rite. The Serpents represent these deity's connection to the circle of life and death. The sword laying beside them and the Raven held by the Moon Goddess depict their immense strengths and energies in nature.

History has lost the actual Great Rite of old but modern Pagans and Wiccans still celebrate the ritual. The symbolic Great Rite is performed by dipping an athame (knife) into a chalice (cup). This ritual represents the physical union of the God and Goddess. This sacred marriage is (hieros gamos) of the Goddess and God is traditionally celebrated on Beltane, May 1st.
